Scoop on OA Ebook Publisher “Double Dipping”
Journal publishers “double dipping” practices have been documented extensively in the literature. Kehoe and Boudinot share their investigation into not-so well-known open access double dipping ebook publishing practices. Academic publishers include a book publishing charge (BPCs) to produce an OA ebook. These publisher practices may have implications for library budgets, approval plans, and vendor relations. We will share some “double dipping” practices employed by OA ebook publishers, and share some best practice strategies for acquisitions approval processing. Publisher ebook double dipping practices also have consequences for authors when signing publication agreements. We recognize the current limitations of publishers’ and vendors’ software or platforms to perform the changes required to move the industry towards better industry standards and an open access publishing model that is equitable rather than exploitative.
