CRKN offers both preservation and access services for digital materials through the Canadiana website. CRKN is a certified Trustworthy Digital Repository (TDR). Through this designation, CRKN offers a long-term preservation service which secures digitized and born-digital materials, including the Canadiana collections, for members and for third-party clients. Operating the CRKN TDR, one of six in the world, ensures that digital content remains secure as technologies and file formats evolve over time.
CRKN also provides public access to the majority of the materials stored in the TDR through the Canadiana collections portal and third-party client portals. By offering both preservation and access services, CRKN ensures that digital materials and metadata will be functional and secure over the long-term, while remaining easily accessible today.
Updates and Improvements to the Canadiana Website
A leader in providing access and preservation to digitized documentary heritage, the Canadiana access and preservation platforms were first custom-built in 2010. Since that time, a number of open source tools have been developed to allow for interoperability between systems and a set of common digital preservation standards have emerged. Under the guidance of the Platform Technical Task Group and the Preservation and Access Committee, CRKN is making significant improvements to the technological infrastructure that supports the accessibility and discoverability of the Canadiana content. CRKN is working towards integrating Archivematica and IIIF, as well as improving the user experience of the site. For more information, please contact info@crkn.ca.
