Persistent Identifiers in Canada
Persistent Identifiers (PIDs) – long-lasting and unique digital labels for people (researchers), places (research organizations), and things (research outputs) – help disambiguate and connect information across the increasingly complex digital research ecosystem. CRKN leads the ORCID Canada Consortium and co-manages the DataCite Canada Consortium with the Digital Research Alliance of Canada, providing critical support for these PIDs across the country. CRKN also provides a home for the Canadian Persistent Identifier Advisory Committee (CPIDAC), which includes senior decision-makers from key research institutions, digital research infrastructure providers, and funding organizations across Canada. Under the guidance of CPIDAC and through work with consultants MoreBrains, CRKN and Alliance staff have developed a suite of practical tools and are drafting a set of future activities to directly support a national PID implementation strategy across the Canadian research ecosystem. In this session, John Aspler and Ursula Carmichael, the Manager and Officer of the Canadian PID Community, respectively, will provide an update on the PID Program at CRKN and will highlight significant advances toward the implementation of a National PID Strategy in Canada. Attendees will also have the opportunity to discuss and provide feedback on the proposed next steps, and the national strategy as a whole.
