It Takes a Village to Flip a Journal: Diamond Open Access as Community Effort
What goes on behind the scenes as a journal flips to open access? Before dropping the paywall, what conversations happen, what supports are put in place, and who is involved? The recent experience of the Journal of Aboriginal Economic Development (JAED) is an interesting case-in-point: within one year, the journal flipped to open access, adopted Open Journal Systems (OJS), and joined Coalition Publica. Now hosted by the University of Alberta library and benefitting from community support from CRKN members through the Partnership for Open Access with Érudit, this panel will share the first-hand perspectives of some of the many people that contributed to JAED’s flip to open access, including the journal’s Editor-in-Chief, a librarian from University of Alberta Library’s Open Publishing Team, and staff from Érudit and Coalition Publica. They will highlight how community efforts assisted with the journal’s flip and how community-based support will help sustain the journal into the future.
