CRKN-SAGE Transformative Agreement | Canadian Research Knowledge Network

For libraries

CRKN has negotiated a transformative “read and publish” agreement with SAGE, beginning January 1, 2021 and valid until December 31, 2023. A public announcement outlining the agreement is available here. Through this agreement, authors affiliated with the 69 participating CRKN institutions (listed below) may publish their articles as open access with no Article Processing Charge (APC) in over 900 SAGE Choice journals (some exclusion do apply; see here).

In addition to the open access components of the agreement, the SAGE agreement also includes increased access to additional SAGE content, such as the Royal Society of Medicine and Institution of Mechanical Engineers journals, for all participating CRKN institutions. Journals both newly launched and acquired by SAGE each year are included at no additional cost.

For authors

CRKN-affiliated authors may publish their articles as open access in over 900 SAGE Choice journals (journals excluded from SAGE Choice are listed here). Authors may also use a 40% APC discount to publish in SAGE’s gold open access journals. Click here to see the title list of participating gold journals. To facilitate open access publishing, processing of the APC waiver for SAGE Choice journals and the discount for gold open access journals is done automatically via the SAGE Open Access Portal (SOAP) when corresponding authors identify themselves as affiliated to a participating CRKN institution. SOAP is a dashboard for authors to submit their article, select a copyright license, assign a bill payer (if applicable), and view article status. A Creative Commons license CC BY will be applied to open access publications unless a different license is requested by the author.

Please note, where an author is eligible for more than one discount for gold journals, discounts cannot be combined but the highest discount available to the author will be applied to the APC due.
