The Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Kim Brooks as the incoming Chair of its Board of Directors. Dr. Brooks will begin her two-year term in this role immediately following the Annual General Meeting on October 4, 2024.
Dr. Brooks has been the President and Vice-Chancellor of Dalhousie University since August 2023. Prior to her appointment as President of the university, she served as the Dean of the Schulich School of Law and as the Dean of the Faculty of Management at Dalhousie.
Dr. Brooks is an accomplished academic and lawyer. After her experience as a tax lawyer with Strikeman Elliott she held several academic and chair positions at McGill University, Dalhousie, Queen’s University, and the University of British Columbia. Dr. Brooks received the 3M Teaching Fellowship in 2010 and holds degrees from University of Toronto, UBC, and the University of Western Australia.
“The CRKN Board of Directors is thrilled to welcome Dr. Kim Brooks into the Chair position,” said Dianne Keeping, Vice-Chair of CRKN’s Board of Directors and Dean, Memorial University Libraries. “Dr. Brooks is a highly regarded leader in the university sector and we are confident that she will bring an engaged and innovative perspective as we continue to advance access to knowledge in Canada.”
“I am deeply honoured to join the CRKN Board of Directors,” said Dr. Brooks. “As we know, Canada is a source of incredible knowledge and there is world-class research happening here. I admire CRKN’s leadership in connecting scholars and the community to knowledge and research, and I look forward to working with the rest of the Board, the staff team, and the CRKN member community to help contribute to our shared vision.”
In addition to her new role chairing CRKN’s Board of Directors, Dr. Brooks has had wide-ranging volunteer governance roles including, Chair of the Halifax Public Libraries Board, President of the Canadian Centre for Legal Innovation in Sexual Assault Response, President of the Canadian Association of Law Teachers, and Chair of the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund.
Dr. Brooks takes over the role of CRKN Board Chair from Daniel Jutras, who will complete his term a year earlier than originally planned due to an increase in responsibilities and travel in his role as Rector at Université de Montréal.
“Daniel Jutras has shown immense commitment and dedication over the past two years. We are all very grateful for his direction and leadership, and we applaud the positive impact he has had on CRKN, its members, and Canada’s research community,” said Keeping.
Dr. Kim Brooks joins 11 other volunteers who make up the Board of Directors. Together they provide strategic oversight and governance responsibilities for CRKN. The governance structure also includes several committees and sub-committees of volunteers, which provide insights from members and stakeholders, helping to drive CRKN’s mission and goals.
