Updated CRKN KBART files (licensed content)
The Knowledge Base Entitlements Sub-Committee is responsible for managing the annual update process for the KBART files for content licensed by CRKN on behalf of its members. The update process considers ceased and transferred out titles, new starts and takeover titles, titles that are moving to open access, and consortial level perpetual access rights for the relevant licenses. The end result is an entitlements list in KBART format for the upcoming calendar year for each of the publishers below.
If you have any questions about the KBART files, please contact Émilie Lavallée-Funston, elavalleefunston@crkn.ca.

Discoverability in Knowledge Bases
To confirm the collection name of a particular list in your institution’s knowledge base of choice, please consult our KBART page which also includes new KBART files for content not under license, like the Canadiana collections and the CRKN Open Access Journals List.
Elsevier ScienceDirect KBART files
In 2020, the Elsevier targets were updated to better represent the different components of the license. However, having received member feedback about the complexity of modifying the coverage thresholds for the Elsevier-provided Freedom Collection target in several systems, the KBESC has decided to reintegrate those holdings into the CRKN-provided target to facilitate activation and accurate discovery by members. This will affect the number of titles in the Elsevier Additional Journals KBART file.
As of February 2021, CRKN members who participate in the Elsevier ScienceDirect license and use CRKN-provided targets should activate the two collections below:
- Elsevier Academic Press
- Elsevier Additional Journals
*Members who had previously activated the Elsevier Freedom Collection target provided directly by Elsevier can deactivate this target, as all titles in the CRKN license, except for individual Subscribed Titles are now covered by the two CRKN targets.
Érudit content
Érudit targets are now provided by Érudit directly and have recently been reorganised. These changes should be available to you. We recommend deactivating any CRKN-Érudit targets, which are no longer maintained. Érudit has provided the following recommendations:
If your institution participates in the Érudit partnership and the Cultural Magazines offer:
- ERUDIT_OPEN_ACCESS_JOURNALS_FREE
- ERUDIT_GLOBAL_COLLECTION_COMPLETE_COLLECTION
If your institution participates only in the Érudit partnership for scholarly journals:
- ERUDIT_OPEN_ACCESS_JOURNALS_FREE
- ÉRUDIT GLOBAL COLLECTION SAVANTES – SCHOLARLY COLLECTION
Additional CRKN KBART files (Non-licensed content)
- CRKN Open Access Journals List
This list is updated on a quarterly basis and contains over 400 gold open access journals supported by CRKN members that are peer-reviewed, scholarly, and not otherwise discoverable in DOAJ or with Érudit. More information here.
- Canadiana collections Monographs
There are more than 85,000 titles in the Canadiana Online collection which are monographs. These titles are accessible at no charge and are available as MARC records from our website or in KBART format in your discovery system. As new content is digitized and catalogued, this list will be updated.
- Canadiana collections Serials
There are more than 2,400 titles in the Canadiana Online collection which are serials. Like the Monographs, these titles are accessible at no charge and metadata in KBART format is available in your discovery system, or in MARC record format online. This list will be updated as new content is made available.
