The Who, Where, What, How, and Why of Open GLAM
In recent years, cultural heritage organizations have made vast amounts of digitized material available online. A stronger push towards Open Access has been gaining momentum after several big institutions in the US and Europe have made their collections available under open licenses and tools. However, the policies and practices are still far away from being consistent, affecting the ability of users to understand how they can make use of the collections.
This presentation will explore the challenges faced by GLAMs in articulating and understanding how copyright can be applied and communicated on their online digital collections. We will then look into new areas of focus for Open Access to digital cultural heritage, with a specific focus on the upcoming Declaration on Open Access to Cultural Heritage and the accompanying research paper. We'll finish by opening a dialogue around what can / is being done in the Canadian context around OpenGLAM.
Overall, this presentation will highlight important issues and challenges associated with open licensing for online cultural heritage collections, and the implications that this has for the copyright community, and researchers, and the broader public as a whole.
