Procuring an Indigenous Health collection using a modified Brian Deer Classification System at McMaster’s Health Sciences Library
This presentation will detail the initial stages of planning and preparation of the collaborative process the McMaster Health Sciences Library undertook to identify and procure an Indigenous Health Collection to support Indigenous and non-Indigenous students and researchers in the area of Indigenous traditional and Western perspectives of Indigenous Health topics, beginning summer 2021. Led by the newly appointed Indigenous Health Librarian, and in consultation with McMaster’s Indigenous Health Initiative’s Lead, an in-depth analysis of current collection capacity to support Indigenous Health was undertaken, and gaps for acquisitions were identified. Separate housing for physical collections were determined to be a preferred method of showcasing the new collection, and a modified Brian Deer Classification System is being developed to address inadequacies of the LC Classification system, including discoverability for collection materials, and culturally appropriate subject headings. The presenters will describe the process, pitfalls, and identify best practices for the development of similar collections, including involving Indigenous stakeholders in consultation stages and as an ongoing process.
