Building a Canadian Community of Practice Around Research Impact
A large number of individuals work across Canada conducting analyses to support researchers and institutions using both bibliometric and qualitative assessments. These analysts are often working by themselves in this work and are in an environment where they have to figure out how to answer very complex questions with little support from their immediate colleagues. This can be a very isolating experience, additionally, it requires a high amount of self-motivation, and because of the political nature of this work, it places individuals in situations where diplomacy and communication play a large role. In 2022, a group of Canadian librarians from separate institutions came together to create a Canadian Community of Practice (CoP) for Bibliometrics and Research Impact. Shortly after creation this CoP received sponsorship from the Canadian Association of Research Libraries. Members of the CoP recognize that by coming together to create a supportive and open community, this work will become less isolating and stronger through the ability to draw on the experiences and knowledge of a network of colleagues. This session will review how the community of practice was created, what’s facilitated it, it's priorities, and the challenges encountered in building and sustaining CARL's Canadian Bibliometrics and Research Impact Community of Practice.
