Collaborative Community Collecting with the Internet Archive
The Internet Archive’s (IA) Community Programs helps memory and research organizations around the world provide universal access to all knowledge. We achieve this mission by working with partners to develop sustainable efforts that respond directly to community needs. In this session, presenters will share more information about IA’s community collecting programs– Community Webs and Collaborative ART Archive (CARTA)– which embody the power of collaborative approaches to building, managing, and preserving digital and born-digital collections.
The Community Webs program strives to increase the diversity of voices represented in the accessible digital historical record and to forge authentic partnerships between the members and the communities they serve. The program showcases how history practitioners can expand the field of web archiving, empowering the national history community to contribute their perspectives and skills, and creating opportunities for members to redress silences found in both web archives and traditional collections.
CARTA facilitates the development of a collaborative membership of art libraries building collections of archived web-based content related to art history and contemporary art practice. Through a consortial approach, the project leverages shared infrastructure, expertise, and collecting activities amongst participating members to achieve a collection scale that would not be possible individually.
Presenters will share aspirations for continued work on building lasting connections with members of IA’s community-driven and responsive programs, as well as share more information on how to get involved.
