Coming Together: A story of how we are building the Edmonton Queer History Digital Collection
Since 2021, the Edmonton Queer History Project (EQHP), MacEwan University Archives, and the University of Alberta Library have been working together on a community-led digital queer history collection by utilizing the organizational strengths of each group. This presentation will talk about how the collaborative efforts of our three organizations came together to make local Edmonton queer history openly accessible online.
We will discuss how EQHP takes the lead by identifying materials of historical importance and actively engaging with various stakeholders, including community members, local 2SLGBTQ+ organizations, and the City of Edmonton Archives. This collaborative work involves securing permissions, obtaining consent, and conducting thorough copyright and privacy risk assessments, showcasing their content expertise and dedication to community engagement.
MacEwan University Archives assists with arranging and describing the curated material, adding a layer of organizational finesse to the collaborative process. Finally, the University of Alberta Library brings the collection to life by digitizing and hosting it online as part of the Internet Archive, takes responsibility for preservation, and ensures this valuable resource is freely accessible to a global audience.
This presentation will highlight a model for community-led collection building that brings together the strengths of different organizations to preserve and share unique community history.
