OMP Under the Spotlight
Open Monograph Press (OMP) is an open source tool developed by PKP that enables a global community of users to publish scholarly books, including monographs, edited volumes and other kinds of long-form scholarship. While crucial to our collective knowledge, book publishing has seen a slower uptake of open practices than journal publishing, evident in the vast difference in numbers of OMP users compared to those using OJS, PKP’s journal publishing platform which is used by 50,000+ journals worldwide. However, as an organization committed to making research a public good, PKP is investing in support for open book publishing, and has undertaken a six month review process to evaluate OMP’s role in the open book landscape. The purpose of the review is to undertake a deep exploration of OMP and its environs in order to better understand how PKP should proceed, both strategically and operationally, in supporting OMP. This presentation shares an overview of open book publishing trends, developed via user interviews with OMP users and mapping of the open book ecosystem, followed by a summary of the review findings, and how PKP is moving forward in pursuit of greater adoption of open book publishing globally. Participants will be invited to contribute to ongoing user experience research that will shape the OMP roadmap.
