Sharing and Preserving Nuclear Science: A Case Study of the Canadian Nuclear Society Proceedings
The Canadian Nuclear Society (CNS), founded in 1979, is dedicated to facilitating information exchange, supporting ongoing education, and promoting the peaceful development and application of nuclear science and technology. Since its inception, the CNS has held regular conferences and produced proceedings covering topics ranging from environmental implications to public consultation on nuclear waste to advances in medical diagnostics and cancer treatment. By 2024, over 7000 conference papers had been published. However, these materials were not electronically available and were difficult to source in print format.
To help unlock these valuable materials and enable their continued discovery and reuse, the University of Regina partnered with the CNS to make their proceedings available both now and in the future. Using Open Journal Systems (OJS), we've established an online presence for the CNS Proceedings Collection, including a rolling paywall enabling most of the CNS backfiles to be made open access. This presentation will cover the project inception and goals, the negotiation process including establishing a Memorandum of Understanding, the technical aspects of project work, and strategies for building and maintaining successful relationships with Society partners.
