FishSounds Fisheries: Open Knowledge in Support of Industry
FishSounds (fishsounds.net) is a growing online portal that makes the science of fish sonifery, or sound production, openly available and easy to access. The website compiles information on fish species and their habitats, summaries of academic publications that studied sound production in fishes, and example recordings of the sounds produced, providing simple search forms to locate relevant information across the dataset. Having demonstrated the utility of the tool for supporting knowledge sharing in research, in education, and with the wider public, our latest ongoing project is FishSounds Fisheries, which aims to add information and functionality in support of industry and management. We have collected additional data for fish species significant in food production and other economic activities in Canada, and in 2025 will hold meetings and workshops with professionals from fisheries and aquaculture sites to determine how best to provide access to the information these users require to facilitate decision making and risk mitigation in their organizations. Through effective tooling, we hope to ensure that the knowledge produced by scientific research can be utilized to improve fisheries operations and monitoring, both economically and environmentally. This presentation will discuss the preliminary results and next steps of the FishSounds Fisheries project.
