Fostering Open Knowledge and Sustainable Futures: Internet Archive Canada's Collaborative Initiatives
This presentation explores how Internet Archive Canada (IAC) and its partners advance open knowledge and sustainable futures through collaborative digital preservation. We'll discuss IAC's partnerships with Canadian institutions, including the Canadian Government Information Digital Preservation Network (CGI-DPN), to preserve government publications and cultural heritage.
Central to our discussion are the "Four Digital Rights for Libraries" based on a report by the Internet Archive: the right to collect and preserve digital materials, lend them similarly to physical items, and cooperate with other libraries. We'll examine how these rights are implemented and advocated for in Canada, especially considering recent legal challenges and copyright discussions.
We'll highlight IAC's involvement in projects like the Collaborative ART Archive (CARTA) and Community Webs Program, demonstrating how open access to diverse knowledge supports sustainable research and cultural preservation. Additionally, we'll showcase IAC's digitization partnerships with institutions like Library and Archives Canada and Vancouver Public Library.
This session aims to illustrate how open knowledge infrastructures contribute to sustainable futures by democratizing information access, preserving cultural heritage, and supporting transparent governance. We'll emphasize the critical role of open knowledge in fostering a more equitable, informed society, particularly in the context of extended copyright terms and evolving intermediary liability frameworks.
