Digital Scholarship and Diasporic Collections
The University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) is embedded in a diverse community that is home to one of the largest Tamil speaking diasporas outside of South Asia. To better reflect this diversity, the UTSC Library has contributed to the development of a Digital Tamil Studies program in an effort to better align with our institutional EDI initiatives and more accurately reflect the UTSC’s community. Our presentation will outline how the UTSC Library’s Digital Scholarship Unit (DSU) contributes to the development of Tamil language collections and our efforts to decolonize practices in digital scholarship. We will outline our on-going efforts in reframing metadata practices that more accurately reflect Tamil language and culture, our ongoing partnership with the Tamil community, and how this work has led to the development of the largest public multilingual data repository on WikiData. We will also discuss how the DSU continues to work on creating trust and transparency with the community and the role that an academic institution can play in documenting and stewarding diasporic histories.
